The Genesis of Justice:
Ten Stories of Biblical Injustice that Led to the
10 Commandments and Modern Law
by Alan M. Dershowitz
Celebrity
attorney Alan Dershowitz makes his case for the origins of Judeo-Christian
law by analyzing some of the wildest, juiciest and most lawless sections
of the Bible. These are, of course, in Genesis. God Himself is shown
to be one of the least law-abiding, most unjust characters in Genesis.
He threatens, then backs down and lets killers go free. He overreacts
and floods the world. He overreacts again and destroys a city. Dershowitz
shows us how the terribly flawed behavior of God and other stars of
Genesis (Abraham who almost murders his own son, Jacob who deceives
his father and brother, Lot's daughters who have sex with their own
father, Tamar who becomes a prostitute and the progenitor of David)
led to the 10 Commandments and eventually, for better and for
worse, the Judeo-Christian sense of justice. Great reading for irreverent,
sex-obsessed Bible junkies like me, or tube-heads who can't get enough
of Dershowitz on MSNBC. --DrSuzyB
